Once you get the hang of holding the hook and yarn, and fetching the yarn through a loop, it all flows from there. Starting with a slip knot, and a basic chain foundation, you can then learn the single, and double crochet stitches. From there you might learn the treble (triple) crochet stitches, and the half-double and slip stitches. Then you will know the most commonly employed stitches in crochet!
Since you only ever have one live loop on the hook at the completion of a stitch, it's easy to "see where you're at" with crochet. It's also easy to create a new stitch along any edge of the work. These factors make it easy to improvise and create fabric of any shape you like, making crochet a favorite of many crafters, including kids!
